Mobile home catches fire in Rancho Cordova, Sac Metro Fire says
THIS IS KCRA THREE NEWS AT FIVE. SEEKING JUSTICE FOR TIRHE REACTION TO THE VERDICT IN THE CASE AGAINST THREE FORMER POLICE OFFICERS. FOR THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN THE BEATING DEATH OF TYREE NICHOLS. NEW EVIDENCE REOPENING AN INFAMOUS CASE IN CALIFORNIA. THE DISCOVERY THAT HAS THE LOS ANGELES DISTRICT ATTORNEY NOW REVIEWING THE MENENDEZ BROTHERS MURDER CASE. ALSO SENDING HELP TO THOSE DEVASTATED BY HELENE. THE RESOURCES LEAVING TODAY FROM THE GOLDEN STATE THAT WILL BE PART OF THE RECOVERY EFFORTS. AND THE HEAT HAS SOME PEOPLE WORRIED ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS, BUT ONE SCHOOL IS DOING TO MAKE SURE THE PLAYERS ARE SAFE. GOOD MORNING. IT’S 5:00. IT IS FRIDAY DEIRDRE FITZPATRICK AND I’M BRANDI CUMMINGS IN FOR TEO TORRES. YEAH, THAT HEAT IS NOT LETTING UP AT ALL. IT’S MILD OUT THERE THIS MORNING, WHICH IS NEVER A GOOD SIGN FOR THE AFTERNOON. SO LET’S GO OVER TO METEOROLOGIST TAMARA BERG. WE HIT A RECORD YESTERDAY. WE DID? YEAH 103 OFFICIALLY HERE IN DOWNTOWN. LADIES IT WAS HOT. YOU KNOW IF YOU SPENT TIME OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY, YOU REALLY FELT THAT HEAT BUILDING TODAY. THE GOOD NEWS IN THE STORY IS TEMPERATURES WILL COME DOWN, BUT IT’S NOT GOING TO BE A BIG DROP OFF. YES. AND YOU NOTICE THIS MORNING JUST HOW MILD IT IS OUT THE DOOR. WE’RE FINALLY IN THE LOW 40S FOR A CHANGE IN THE MOUNTAINS VERSUS THOSE 30S. WE TYPICALLY WAKE UP TO. WE’RE AT 73, RIGHT NOW IN AUBURN, 75 IN PLACERVILLE, 71. IF YOU’RE JUST HEADING OUT FOR THIS EARLY MORNING IN MODESTO, 65 AND 67 IN SACRAMENTO, AND OUT THE DOOR IN FAIRFIELD, YOU’RE GOING TO FIND UPPER 60S AS WELL. A COUPLE OF POCKETS OF AREAS THAT ARE UP THIS MORNING IN TERMS OF TEMPERATURES, MODESTO YOU’RE ONE OF THEM, EIGHT DEGREES WARMER. MEANTIME STOCKTON DOWN A DEGREE AND THEN WE’RE 4 TO 10 DEGREES WARMER ON THIS FRIDAY MORNING IN AREAS LIKE SACRAMENTO AND FAIRFIELD. THAT’S A LIVE LOOK IN DOWNTOWN, WHERE THE SKIES ARE MAINLY CLEAR OVERALL PLEASANT TO MILD. START TO YOUR DAY. THE HEAT IS EXPECTED TO LINGER AND WE’LL HAVE PLENTY OF SUNSHINE TO BE EXPECTED. THE WINDS ARE ALSO STARTING TO TURN A NEW DIRECTION HERE. COMING UP FROM THE SOUTH TO SOUTHWEST, WHICH WILL HELP TO EASE TEMPERATURES SLIGHTLY. BUT AGAIN, WE’RE SEEING A SLIGHT DROP OFF FOR TODAY. MOST OF THE VALLEY FLOOR UPPER 90S, A FEW SPOTS REACHING THAT CENTURY MARK AGAIN IN THE FOOTHILLS, SUNNY AND WARM. WE’LL STAY WITH THOSE LOW TO MID 90S. AND FOR THE SIERRA PLAN FOR HIGHS IN THE MID 70S. COMING UP IN THE NEXT TEN MINUTES, I’LL BREAK DOWN THAT FORECAST FOR YOU DIALED IN RIGHT TO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD. IT IS 502. AARON IS IN FOR BRIAN WATCHING YOUR MORNING DRIVE AND WE HAVE AN ODDITY HAPPENING ON I-5 RIGHT NOW. CAMERAS FROZEN JUST FOR THE MOMENT. BUT REALLY, THIS IS RICHARDS BOULEVARD AT I-5, AND IT IS IN A STANDSTILL. NO INCIDENTS THAT ARE HAPPENING, BUT YOU CAN SEE THAT LITTLE RED ON THE MAP. THERE BETWEEN SACRAMENTO’S DOWNTOWN AND REALLY WHERE THE CONNECTOR HAPPENS AND UP TO THE AIRPORT. ODD. SO WE’RE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT’S GOING ON THERE. STOCKTON DOING FINE THIS MORNING. IF WE PUSH IT OVER TO TRACY. YEAH, THERE IS A SLOWDOWN, BUT IT’S NOT TERRIBLE. IT’S YES, RED, BUT 19 MILES AN HOUR IS STILL WHAT IT’S GOING AT. SO THAT’S NOT TERRIBLE. WE ARE FULLY IN THE GREEN. IF YOU ARE HEADED THROUGH TRACY AND ON OUR WAY TO THE BAY TODAY AND SACRAMENTO ALSO FULLY IN THE GREEN. BACK TO YOU. ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU. THREE FORMER MEMPHIS POLICE OFFICERS ARE NOW CONVICTED FOR THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN THE BEATING DEATH OF TYREE NICHOLS. NICHOLS GREW UP IN SACRAMENTO. HE DIED AFTER HE WAS BEATEN DURING A TRAFFIC STOP IN JANUARY OF 2023. HIS DEATH HAD A DEEP IMPACT IN SACRAMENTO AND EVEN LED TO THE RENAMING OF A PARK AFTER HIM. THAT PARK IS WHERE HE DEVELOPED HIS LOVE OF SKATEBOARDING AND WHERE HE BUILT STRONG FRIENDSHIPS. YESTERDAY, THE JURY DELIVERED A MIXED VERDICT IN THE FEDERAL TRIAL AGAINST THREE FORMER OFFICERS INVOLVED IN HIS DEATH. THE JURY CONVICTED THREE OF WITNESS TAMPERING. ONE OF THE OFFICERS WAS ALSO CONVICTED OF FEDERAL CIVIL RIGHTS VIOLATIONS. NICHOLS FAMILY WAS IN MEMPHIS AS THOSE CONVICTIONS WERE ANNOUNCED AND WE SPOKE TO LONGTIME FRIENDS WHO SAY THAT THEY CONSIDER THIS JUSTICE SERVED. YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW. YOU DO BAD THINGS. YOU’RE GOING TO GET BAD THINGS. WE PUT TWO YEARS OF OUR LIVES DEDICATED TO THIS, AND I THINK WE ALL NEEDED TO SEE FOR CLOSURE. I NEEDED TO SEE JUSTICE COME THROUGH FOR US, AND I WANTED TO SEE IT IN PERSON. NICHOLS LOVED ONES ARE NOW WAITING FOR A TRIAL DATE TO BE SET IN STATE COURT, WHERE FIVE OFFICERS ARE CHARGED WITH SECOND DEGREE MURDER IN CONNECTION WITH HIS DEATH. WELL, THERE ARE NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN THE INFAMOUS MENENDEZ BROTHERS MURDER CASE. PROSECUTORS IN LOS ANGELES ARE REVIEWING THE CASE AFTER NEW EVIDENCE WAS DISCOVERED. LYLE AND ERIK MENENDEZ WERE CONVICTED OF KILLING THEIR PARENTS IN THEIR BEVERLY HILLS MANSION MORE THAN 35 YEARS AGO. THE TWO BROTHERS, NOW IN THEIR 50S, WERE SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON WITHOUT PAROLE. THE NEW EVIDENCE COULD SUPPORT THE BROTHERS CLAIM THAT THEY WERE SEXUALLY ABUSED BY THEIR PARENTS. IT INCLUDES A LETTER ERIC WROTE TO HIS COUSIN, WHICH WAS RECENTLY DISCOVERED BY THE COUSINS MOTHER. WE HAVE NOT DECIDED ON THE OUTCOME. WE ARE REVIEWING THE INFORMATION, BUT I THINK IT’S ALSO IMPORTANT THAT WE RECOGNIZE THAT BOTH MEN AND WOMEN CAN BE THE VICTIMS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT. THE ATTORNEY REPRESENTING THE BROTHERS PRAISED THE DA FOR REVIEWING THE CASE, SAYING UNDERSTANDING ABUSE HAS EVOLVED IN THE 35 YEARS SINCE THEY WERE CONVICTED. THE DA SAYS HIS OFFICE WILL REVIEW THE NEW EVIDENCE AND DECIDE IF THE CASE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED FOR RESENTENCING. A HEARING IS NOW SCHEDULED FOR LATE NOVEMBER. ALL OF THIS COMES AS THE CASE HAS EXPERIENCED RENEWED INTEREST BECAUSE OF A NEW NETFLIX SERIES ABOUT IT. WELL, TURNING NOW TO OUR WILDFIRE COVERAGE AND A FIRE THAT’S BURNING IN A REMOTE PART OF THE STANISLAUS NATIONAL FOREST HAS GROWN TO 145 ACRES. THIS MORNING. THIS IS A TIME LAPSE NOW OF THE PEAK FIRE FROM YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. IT IS BURNING EAST OF PINE CREST AND IT IS STILL VERY ACTIVE. CURRENTLY THERE ARE NO EVACUATION ORDERS OR WARNINGS. OFFICIALS ARE INVESTIGATING WHAT CAUSED A FIRE TO SPARK IN THIS REMOTE AREA. AS OF LAST UPDATE, CONTAINMENT IS AT 10% RIGHT NOW. THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH IS INVESTIGATING TWO POSSIBLE HUMAN CASES OF BIRD FLU. HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY THAT TWO DAIRY FARM WORKERS HAD CONTACT WITH INFECTED CATTLE AT TWO DIFFERENT FARMS. THEY DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THE TWO CASES ARE CONNECTED. NEARLY EVERY HUMAN CASE OF BIRD FLU IN THE U.S. THIS YEAR HAS COME FROM PEOPLE WHO ARE DIRECTLY WORKING WITH INFECTED ANIMALS. TURNING NOW TO THE LATEST ON THE IMPACT OF HELENE. AT LEAST 215 PEOPLE ARE NOW REPORTED DEAD IN THE SIX STATES HIT BY THE STORM. SEARCH AND RESCUE EFFORTS CONTINUE ACROSS THE STORM’S PATH. HELENE IS NOW THE DEADLIEST HURRICANE TO HIT THE MAINLAND U.S. SINCE KATRINA ALMOST TWO DECADES AGO. SEVERAL FEET OF FAST MOVING WATER DESTROYED ENTIRE COMMUNITIES. HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE ARE STILL MISSING. MANY ROADS ARE STILL IMPASSABLE. PRIVATE HELICOPTER COMPANIES ARE TAKING IN FOOD AND WATER AND FUEL THEIR VOLUNTEERS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE HEADED THERE TO ASSIST IN RECOVERY EFFORTS. AND THIS MORNING, 750,000 CUSTOMERS ACROSS THOSE SIX STATES ARE STILL WITHOUT POWER. NEARLY 50,000 UTILITY WORKERS FROM 40 STATES AND CANADA ARE ON THEIR WAY TO HELP IN THAT POWER RESTORATION EFFORT. THAT INCLUDES CREWS FROM PG AND E, THEY ARE FLYING OUT OF SACRAMENTO THIS MORNING, HEADING TO GEORGIA. WE WILL HAVE A LIVE REPORT IN OUR NEXT HALF HOUR AS THOSE CREWS GO TO ASSIST STORM VICTIMS. TURNING NOW TO WEATHER HERE AT HOME. FALL IS OFF TO A HOT START AND STUDENTS PLAYING SPORTS ARE HOPING THAT THIS WILL COOL DOWN SOON. MODESTO CITY SCHOOLS ARE USING A NEW TOOL TO TRACK WEATHER CONDITIONS. IT’S CALLED THE PERRY WEATHER STATION. THEY DO HAVE ONE AT SEVEN OF THE DISTRICT’S HIGH SCHOOLS, AND THE TOOL COLLECTS DATA TO HELP THE COACHES AND THE ADMINISTRATORS MAKE DECISIONS ABOUT OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES IN THE GOAL OF ENHANCING STUDENT SAFETY. WHEN YOU START TALKING ABOUT HEAT STROKE, HEAT ILLNESS, HEAT EXHAUSTION, THOSE ARE LIFE CHANGING ILLNESSES THAT COULD HAPPEN. AND THE ONLY WAY TO MONITOR THAT IS TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THE TEMPERATURE IS OUTSIDE COMPARED TO WHAT THE ATHLETES ARE GOING THROUGH. BUT THE EQUIPMENT IS THAT THEY HAVE ON HOW OFTEN THEY’RE GETTING THEIR WATER BREAKS. SCHOOL OFFICIALS SAY THAT EACH OF THE SEVEN WEATHER STATIONS HAS A FOUR MILE RADIUS. THEY CAN SERVE THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY OF MODESTO. 507 IS YOUR TIME. LET’S CHECK IN WITH METEOROLOGIST TAMARA BERG NOW. AND MAN, THIS IS WHAT DID YOU CALL IT? OCTOBER. YEAH. YOU KNOW, LADIES, WE HAD MANY RECORDS FALL ACROSS THE REGION. I’LL GO THROUGH THOSE NUMBERS FOR YOU IN JUST A LITTLE BIT. BUT IT’S ALSO GOING TO CONTINUE TO BE VERY HOT OUT THERE, ESPECIALLY ON THE GRIDIRON LATER TONIGHT WHEN THERE’S THE JV AND VARSITY FOOTBALL GAMES, YOU HAVE TO BE MINDFUL OF THIS TYPE OF HEAT, ESPECIALLY IN EARLY OCTOBER. A LIVE LOOK OUTSIDE RIGHT NOW IN RANCHO CORDOVA, WHERE THE TEMPERATURES ARE IN THE UPPER 60S AROUND SACRAMENTO COUNTY. WE’RE AT 71, IN MODESTO, 65 IN STOCKTON AND 43 CHECKING IN ON LAKE TAHOE. IT IS THE FOURTH DAY OF OCTOBER, AND WHILE THOSE NUMBERS WILL EASE SLIGHTLY TODAY WE’RE STILL GOING TO BE PLENTY WARM. UPPER 90S EXPECTED AROUND THE VALLEY FLOOR, WELL ABOVE THAT AVERAGE OF 84. AND I DON’T EXPECT WE’RE GOING TO SEE ANY AS MANY RECORDS FALL TODAY AS WE SAW, OF COURSE, YESTERDAY. WE’RE STILL LOOKING PRETTY TOASTY FOR QUINCY AT 87. TRUCKEE TOPS OUT AT 79 AND WILL BE AT 87. IN POLLOCK PINES LOW 90S TODAY AROUND YOSEMITE SHOULD BE A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE FOOTHILLS. IT’S GOING TO START OUT PLEASANT AND MILD, BUT THEN REALLY HEAT UP FROM THERE. WE’RE GOING TO MID 90S TODAY IN PLACERVILLE JACKSON PLYMOUTH AREA. 94 IN ANGELS CAMP, 95 SLATED FOR SONORA OUT ALONG THE COAST. IT’S STILL GOING TO BE VERY WARM BY COASTAL STANDARDS HERE. SAN FRANCISCO AT 82. SAN JOSE 94. AND NAPA LOGGING 92 DEGREES. YOUR FRIDAY INTO THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY WILL INCLUDE SUNSHINE AND SOME HEAT. 102 TODAY IN STOCKTON. COULD GET AS HOT AS 101 AND TRACY IN ABOUT 100. EXPECTED FOR MODESTO SACRAMENTO IN THE SUBURBS. AGAIN, YOU’RE GOING TO SEE THOSE NUMBERS ETCHED DOWN SLIGHTLY. WOODLAN LOOKING AT 97, BUT ROSEVILLE STILL HITTING THAT CENTURY MARK ALONG WITH YUBA CITY, SACRAMENTO WILL BE AT 99, DAVIS HITTING 97. COMING UP HERE IN THE NEXT TEN MINUTES, I’LL BREAK DOWN FOR YOU. WHAT THE WHAT THE HEAT LOOKS LIKE FOR THE WEEKEND. AND WHEN SOME COOLER CHANGES COME OUR WAY NEXT WEEK, 809 IS THE TIME. AARON, WHERE IS THE ISSUE ON THE HIGHWAYS? SO IT LOOKED LIKE WE HAD ONE AND THEN IT COMPLETELY CLEARED OUT. THIS IS WHAT WE SHOWED YOU. LESS THAN TEN MINUTES AGO. AT THE TOP OF THE HOUR, THERE WAS JUST GRIDLOCK TRAFFIC ON I-5 NORTHBOUND. THIS IS ANOTHER VANTAGE POINT FROM I-5 AT P STREET. AND YEAH, THERE WAS NO INCIDENT. AND THEY ARE DISPERSING THAT EVEN THAT RED BLIP ON THE MAP IS GONE. IF WE TAKE A LOOK DOWN AT STOCKTON STOCKTON DOING WELL, NO INCIDENTS TO SPEAK OF THIS MORNING. SAME CAN GO FOR TRACY. IT’S JUST A LITTLE SLOW, BUT IT ONLY GETS DOWN TO 25 MILES AN HOUR AND THAT’S NOT TERRIBLE. SOMETIMES WE SEE IT DOWN TO LIKE FIVE MILES AN HOUR. SO PERSPECTIVE. WE HAVE JOGGED UP 25 MINUTES RIGHT NOW, 205 TO 680. EVERYBODY ELSE ON THE WAY TO THE BAY IN THE GREEN. AND THEN SACRAMENTO FULLY AT THE LIMIT. BACK TO YOU. ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU. IT’S 510 NOW. AN AIRSTRIKE OVERNIGHT IN LEBANON. THE LATEST ON THE ACTION OF ISRAELI MILITARY AND THE IMPACT IT’S HAVING ON THOSE FLEEING FROM THE CONFLICT. AND BACK TO WORK FOR THE DOCK WORKERS. WE’LL TAKE A LOOK AT THE DEAL THAT DID STOP THE STRIKE BEFORE HAVING A MAJOR IMPACT ON THE
